Every dog has its day and it has been a long time coming on this tour but England finally remembered how to play one day cricket and beat Australia posting a very competitive total of 292-7 with Ed Joyce top scoring with 107 Australia in reply were 200-9 with Andrew Symonds having retired hurt and unable to bat.

Thank god the ashes is finally over to say it has been embarrassing is somewhat of an understatement all through the tour we have had Flintoff and Fletcher coming out with the same lines trying to defend their cock ups.
The ashes series winner market has not been in doubt since England toured Pakistan winter 2005 of course Australia were nailed on to win but 5-0? i'm sorry but England did not even put up a fight it seemed to be just a jolly in the sun for some of the players while Australia by comparison batted better, bowled better, fielded better, selected better, coached better and sledged better in fact they even had the best nervous twitch courtesy of Stuart Clark.
England on the other hand crumbled whenever a pressure situation arose and we keep hearing how they tried their best!
To a man Australia wore their badge with pride the same cannot be said of the England team.

It emerges that Englands bowling plans for all the Australian batsmen have been stolen from the England dressing room at the MCG (melbourne cricket ground) and then leaked to the Australian radio station ABC who published the document.
The document contained information regarding the batting weaknesses of all the Australian players and while the document contained commonsense strategies and nothing out of the ordinary the episode is nevertheless hugely embarrasing for the ECB, Cricket Australia and the ICC.
There is no truth in the rumour that the document inlcuded plans for bowling the first ball of the 2006/07 ashes series to 2nd slip nor for bowling an inconsistent line and length.

So Australia go 3-0 up with 2 tests to play and therefore win back the ashes Australia have played well of that there is no doubt but the most frustrating thing is that England did not compete.
Ever since Australia lost the ashes in 2005 they have been planning for this series and they appeared to want it more than England did and that is a cause for concern.
In defence of England they are weaker now compared to 2005 as they have been deprived of key players such as skipper Michael Vaughan and bowler Simon Jones through injury and Marcus Trescothick through a "stress related illness" additionally players such as Flintoff, Anderson and Giles have just returned from long term injuries while Australia have improved replacing Simon Katich with Mike Hussey and replacing Jason Gillespie with Simon Clark.
Some critics have cited a lack of preparation as one of the reasons for England's disappointing performance and that is a valid point although the single biggest factor is surely not selecting the best team because against Australia that is suicide.
The captaincy has also been highlighted do we really expect Flintoff to take wickets score runs and captain the side as well? Like Botham before him great players do not necessarily make great captains it was argued months ago that it was too great a workload for Flintoff and Strauss would be the commonsense choice furthermore i suspect that if Strauss had been captain certainly Panesar and Read would have played in the Tests after all they both had decent series against Pakistan under the captaincy of Strauss.
Hopefully Vaughan will prove his fitness on what is left of the tour.
The younger players Cook, Bell and Panesar will benefit from the experience of playing in an ashes series in Australia

Amazingly it emerges that chairman of selectors David Graveney does not have any input on team selection during this ashes series so apparently Duncan Fletcher and skipper Andrew Flintoff have the most say on selection although the players management committee which consists of 3 players namely Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood and wait for it Geraint Jones also have an input.

Monty Panesar is undoubtedly our best spin bowler and was arguably Englands bowler of the summer but amazingly he is left out the selectors preferring Ashley Giles 33 years of age out of cricket for a year through injury was never a real wicket taking threat before his injury but he might score a few more runs than Panesar with the bat big deal.

Chris Read is recognized as the best wicket keeper in the country although there have been concerns over his batting the selectors leave him out preferring Geraint Jones conveniently overlooking the fact that Jones was dropped in favour of Read in the summer because of Jones lack of runs Jones duly went back to his county and didn't score runs but is preferred to Read anyway.

Australia are 2-0 up.

Worryingly Duncan Fletcher defended the England selection policy thus far even though England are now 2-0 down why do i get the feeling that the England team for the 3rd test will be unchanged?
To beat Australia you have got to take 20 wickets and Flintoff and Hoggard cannot carry the attack throughout the whole series they need support so far in this series England do not look like they are capable of bowling out Australia twice.

So Australia win the 2nd ashes test and go 2-0 up with 3 tests remaining England have somehow managed to lose what seemed at close of play on day 2 like an unlosable test match.
Andrew Strauss was the victim of a poor umpiring decision but the rest of the batsmen were like rabbits in the headlights when Shane Warne was bowling.

The whole England set up should be absolutely furious that they have managed to lose this test match from such a strong position I do not think there was anything wrong with the 1st innings declaration although when England were toiling away on day 4 desperate for wickets you can't help thinking it would have been different if Monty Panesar had been playing.

For the first three days of this 1st Ashes test the England selectors defensive selection policy has backfired in spectacular fashion.
With the exception of Andrew Flintoff with the ball and Ian Bell with the bat England have produced a gutless display devoid of any aggression or consistency Australia on the other hand have thoroughly outclassed a sorry England it is a simple game when Australia bowl it is amazing what can be achieved on a good batting pitch when you put the ball in the right areas often enough.

Day 1 to Australia then Flintoff apart none of Englands bowlers looked capable of worrying the aussies.
People are saying it is a flat pitch maybe it is but Harmison opened the series by carrying on where he left off in the summer by spraying the ball all over the place.
Perhaps the pitch will not look as flat when Shane Warne is bowling with plenty of close fielders round the bat.
Ponting great player though he is will probably not score a more comfortable test hundred.
About a year ago Matt Hayden suggested that Andrew Flintoff carried England i laughed it off at the time as other players as well as Flintoff played a major role in Englands ashes victory in 2005 but on day one at the Gabba Flintoff certainly did carry England.

Giles instead of Panesar

From a trading point of view i would have preferred Panesar as he is more of a wicket taker even if his fielding is not the best yes Giles is a better batsman and fielder than Panesar but you need to bowl teams out twice to win test matches.
For years Giles place in the side was safe because we did not have a serious alternative at least now he knows he has got a fight on his hands
Australia have won the toss and will bat first cue Giles to take wickets when he eventually gets the ball but don't hold your breath.
